Designing your website is one of the very first things you should do when you start a new business, whether it's a one-person babysitting operation or a brand new clinic with many employees. Websites help get the word out about your business and allow potential customers to collect information about your products or services at their own pace, on their own time, and without having to interact with a sales representative. If this is your very first website, here are some things to think about when you're designing it.

Navigation

One of the most important facets of website design is making sure the information in your site it laid out properly and that it is easy for customers to find what they are looking for. You might use a navigation bar, a frame, clickable images, dropdown menus, in text links, or some combination of these techniques, but when you mention your service the customer should easily be able to find more information about them. Each page on your site should be linked to all the others.

Relevance

When you're deciding what information to put on your site, keep it relevant. Customers need only the basics when they're looking you up online, which means contact information, a list of services, pricing, how to order, and some testimonials or info sheets about the product or service. It can be tempting to get side tracked and put a lot of background information in there, but this is all extraneous and will likely bore customers, which will make them click away to another website.

Aesthetics

Aesthetics in a website serves two purposes: firstly, a nice looking website will create the impression of a company that knows what it's doing, even though it might not make sense to you that making a nice website be a skill all people should have. Doing a good job on your website says you care and you are professional and trustworthy. Secondly, people are more likely to be drawn to and stay on a website that looks nice, has pleasing colors, and has a professional look.

Findability

This is another crucial facet of web design. It's all well and good to produce a website about the product you have on offer, but if customers don't know it exists, how can they visit it? To increase your findability, include your web address on all your literature and advertisements. It will also help to optimize your site for search engines, list it in directories, and buy advertising space in a list of relevant search engine returns.
