6) What about insurance?

Answer: All competitors must provide proof of third-party liability insurance. The minimum liability is CDN$ 1 million, but CDN$ 2 million is preferred. It is recommended that competitors purchase insurance coverage before arriving in Canada, as it will be difficult to obtain after they have arrived.

If you are chartering a boat from a charter company in Canada, the charter company should provide charter insurance services.

7) Do I need a 'pleasure craft operator card'?

Answer: According to the Office of Boating Safety (Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans Canada), all Canadian residents who wish to operate a pleasure craft fitted with a motor, and who were born after April 1, 1983, must have a valid pleasure craft operator card.

The pleasure craft operator card must also be carried by non-residents of Canada whose pleasure craft is in Canada more than 45 consecutive days. Operator card or equivalent issued to a non-resident by their state or country will be considered as proof of competency.

Further recommendations concerning boating safety in Canadian waters can be found on the Canadian Coast Guard's Web page.

The operator card program is being phased in. Other dates to remember:
  • After September 15, 2002, all operators of motorized craft under 4 m in length, including personal watercraft, will be required to carry the operator card.
  • After September 15, 2009, all operators of motorized craft will be required to carry the operator card.
